Ocean Navigator is an aid to navigation for the modern navigator, it includes a simple sight reduction program for sun sights, plus Great Circle and Rumb Line calculator to find the course to steer and distance by entering a start lat and long and a destination lat and long.

See the screen shots below for examples of the running program.

It is composed of eight separate elements.

  • Sun Sight Reduction
  • Latitude by sun's meridian passage
  • Great Circle calculation
  • Rumb Line calculation
  • Average Speed
  • Course made good
  • Extreme Range
  • Distance by Vertical Angle

The Sun Sight Reduction program is designed for navigators who need a backup to their GPS system or for those doing their RYA Ocean Practical to check their workings. No books or tables need be carried.

The program will produce an accurate position line for any date between the years 1900 and 2100.
There is no need with this program to choose a position (CP) so that the DR position can be used, except when using examples from books when the CP must be used.
